South Korea's Everland Opens Public Vote to Name Baby Giant Panda
ENEASY ENGLISH
A baby giant panda in South Korea already has more than ten thousand fans helping to choose her name. The female cub was born on June 3, 2026, at Everland, South Korea's largest theme park, to parents Ai Bao and Le Bao. Zookeepers narrowed more than 10,000 public suggestions down to five finalists: Ju Bao, Jun Bao, Lin Bao, Yu Bao, and Shu Bao. Every name ends with "Bao," meaning "treasure," a tradition shared by pandas across this family. The public vote, organized by Everland and the Chinese Embassy in South Korea, runs through August 30, and the winning name will be announced in mid-September, when the cub turns 100 days old. She already has three older siblings: Pu Bao, born in 2020, and twins Rui Bao and Hui Bao, born in 2023. At her latest checkup, the cub weighed about 3.7 kilograms, twenty times heavier than her birth weight of just 171 grams. Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Dai Bing called the pandas "friendship envoys" between the two countries, showing how one small cub can carry big diplomatic meaning.
IBM Connects First Modular Cryogenic Systems in Quantum Computing Milestone
ENEASY ENGLISH
IBM has taken a big step toward building one of the most powerful computers ever imagined: a fault-tolerant quantum computer that rarely makes mistakes. On August 19, 2026, the company announced that it had successfully connected two separate cryogenic modules into a single, continuously cooled system, an important test for its future quantum machines. Each module cools down to an extreme 15 millikelvin, more than 180 times colder than deep space, after first reaching 4 Kelvin in under five days. The combined structure stands more than eight feet tall and wide, with twelve times more internal wiring space than IBM's current quantum computers, all needed to control extremely sensitive quantum chips. IBM Research director Jay Gambetta said that "bringing fault-tolerant quantum computers to industries depends on several fundamental advances," and this cooling breakthrough is one of them. The modular design lets engineers test and improve each part separately instead of rebuilding an entire machine every time. IBM plans to connect multiple linked processors with at least 1,000 working qubits by 2027, on the way to delivering IBM Quantum Starling in 2029, which the company hopes will become the world's first fault-tolerant quantum computer.
Mondo Duplantis Wins Thrilling Pole Vault Duel in Lausanne, Just Misses World Record
ENEASY ENGLISH
Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis put on a thrilling show beside Lake Geneva, even though he narrowly missed breaking his own world record. At the Wanda Diamond League city event in Lausanne, Switzerland, on August 20, 2026, Duplantis won with a clearance of 6.21 meters, holding off a strong challenge from Greece's Emmanouil Karalis, who cleared 6.16 meters. Only three athletes in history have ever cleared 6.16 meters or higher: Duplantis, Karalis, and former record holder Renaud Lavillenie. After his win, Duplantis attempted 6.32 meters twice, trying to add one more centimeter to the world record of 6.31 meters he set in Uppsala, Sweden, in March 2026, but both attempts failed. "I'm tired — but I feel really good, I feel really happy," Duplantis said after the competition. "That's competition, that's what we live for." Australia's Kurtis Marschall finished third with a clearance of 5.91 meters. The event took place on a special outdoor stage built next to the lake, drawing large crowds who watched two of the greatest pole vaulters in history push each other to new heights.
Solar Eclipse Over Spain Reveals a Rare Golden Corona
ENEASY ENGLISH
When the Moon completely blocked the Sun over Spain on August 12, 2026, sky-watchers expected to see the Sun's outer atmosphere, called the corona, glowing its usual pearly white. Instead, many observers saw something surprising: a corona shining in warm shades of gold. NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day explained on August 17 that two things combined to create this rare golden color. First, from Spain, totality happened while the Sun was low near the horizon, so its light had to pass through an unusually thick layer of atmosphere, which scattered away most of the blue light. Second, smoke from nearby forest fires acted like an extra filter, scattering even more blue light and deepening the golden glow. Interestingly, one feature kept its normal color: a glowing pink prominence, a loop of hot hydrogen gas, still appeared bright pink at the Sun's edge, standing out clearly against the gold corona. Photographer Rui Santos captured the striking scene from the town of Benavente, Spain, combining several exposures to reveal both the golden corona and the pink prominence in one dramatic image.

(Astronomy Picture of the Day)」は8月17日(8月17日)、この珍しい金色を生み出した2つ(2つ)の要因を説明しました。
Dolphins Filmed Using Seashells to Catch Fish on Australia's East Coast
ENEASY ENGLISH
Marine scientists in Australia have filmed wild dolphins using empty seashells as fishing tools, and the discovery hints that dolphins on opposite coasts may have invented the same clever trick independently. Dr. Alexis Levengood, an animal behaviourist at the University of the Sunshine Coast, recorded bottlenose dolphins hunting with large bailer shells in the Great Sandy Marine Park near Hervey Bay, Queensland, during July and October 2025. The behavior, called "shelling," involves a dolphin chasing a fish into an empty bailer shell, a type of sea snail shell that can grow as big as a football, then lifting the shell to the surface and shaking it so the trapped fish slides into its mouth. Until now, shelling had only been documented among dolphins in Shark Bay, Western Australia, thousands of kilometers away, so this is the first published record of the behavior on Australia's east coast. Levengood also filmed something remarkable: an adult female dolphin dropped her shell after a fish escaped, and minutes later her calf picked up the same shell and held it exactly the same way, suggesting the young dolphin was learning by watching its mother. The findings were published in the journal Marine Mammal Science.

Coffee Drinkers May Have Less Body Fat and More Muscle, Finnish Study Finds
ENEASY ENGLISH
A large Finnish study suggests that coffee lovers may carry less body fat and more muscle than people who rarely drink it, even when their weight looks the same on a scale. Researchers at the University of Oulu analyzed data from 2,264 adults, all around 46 years old, who are part of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. Led by doctoral researcher Luca Verroest, the team found that people who drank five or more cups of coffee a day had an average body fat percentage of about 27 percent, compared with about 29 percent among non-drinkers, despite having a similar body mass index. Heavy coffee drinkers also showed lower blood levels of branched-chain amino acids, substances that have been linked to insulin resistance and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes when they build up in the body. In men, higher coffee intake was also connected to higher testosterone levels. The researchers stress that this is an observational study, so it shows a link rather than proof that coffee itself changes the body. Further research is needed to confirm whether coffee actually causes these differences. The study was published in the European Journal of Nutrition.

German Teen Johannes Liebmann Smashes 1500m Freestyle World Record
ENEASY ENGLISH
German teenager Johannes Liebmann stunned the swimming world by smashing the men's 1500-meter freestyle world record at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris on August 15, 2026. The 19-year-old finished in 14 minutes and 26.79 seconds, slicing 3.88 seconds off the previous record set by American swimmer Bobby Finke at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Liebmann became the first man in history to swim the distance in under 14 minutes and 30 seconds. "It's an unbelievable time. I didn't think this was possible for me," Liebmann said after the race, adding that he realized he was ahead of pace by the halfway point and that the crowd's cheering carried him through the final 100 meters. The event completed a distance double for Liebmann, who also won gold in the 800-meter freestyle at the same championships. His world record continues a tradition of dominance in distance swimming once held by fellow record-breakers, including Australians Grant Hackett and Kieren Perkins. On the same day, American swimmer Kate Douglass also set a world record, clocking 23.49 seconds in the women's 50-meter freestyle.
Scientists and Traditional Owners Map Ancient Landscapes Beneath the Great Barrier Reef
ENEASY ENGLISH
Scientists and Aboriginal Traditional Owners have teamed up on a 24-day voyage to map ancient landscapes hidden beneath the southern Great Barrier Reef. Led by the University of Queensland aboard the research vessel RV Investigator, a 94-meter ship operated by Australia's science agency CSIRO, the team worked alongside the Darumbal and Woppaburra peoples, whose ancestors have lived in the region for more than 65,000 years. About 7,000 years ago, sea levels were roughly 80 meters lower than today, meaning rivers, lakes, estuaries, and beaches where people once lived now lie underwater. Using sonar, the researchers created detailed maps of this submerged terrain and collected more than 20 sediment cores from the seafloor to study the ancient environment layer by layer. Chief scientist Professor Helen Bostock said the survey revealed submerged rivers, lakes, estuaries, and beaches in stunning detail. Indigenous ranger Nataliah Backo said the research deepens her community's connection to their ancestors' sea country. The project combined modern ocean science with traditional knowledge passed down through generations, offering new insight into how the coastline has changed since the last ice age.

Astronomers Find the Fastest Star Ever Seen Near Our Galaxy's Black Hole
ENEASY ENGLISH
Astronomers have spotted the fastest star ever recorded orbiting the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, and it might help scientists finally measure how fast that black hole spins. Using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope Interferometer in Chile, a team led by Felix Mang at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics discovered the star, named S301, racing around Sagittarius A* at roughly 25,000 kilometers per second, about 8 percent of the speed of light. That is around 100,000 times faster than a commercial airplane. S301 completes one full orbit in just 8.7 years and swings as close as 1.78 billion kilometers from the black hole at its nearest approach, closer than any star observed there before. Because it travels so near the black hole, S301 is expected to feel subtle effects caused by the black hole's own rotation, something scientists have never been able to directly detect before. Mang said the team hopes to measure the black hole's spin within the next ten years using this star's orbit. Nobel laureate Reinhard Genzel, who also worked on the discovery, called it an important new tool for testing Einstein's theory of general relativity in one of the most extreme environments in the universe. The findings were published in the journal Nature.

French Astronaut Sophie Adenot Completes Historic First Spacewalk
ENEASY ENGLISH
On August 18, 2026, French astronaut Sophie Adenot stepped outside the International Space Station and made history as the first French woman ever to complete a spacewalk. Working alongside NASA astronaut Anil Menon, she spent six hours and twenty-three minutes working near the station's truss structure to remove a failed Space-to-Ground antenna. The pair also inspected a portable foot restraint near the Quest airlock while completing several cleanup tasks. Removing the old antenna took longer than planned because stubborn electrical cables and bolts refused to cooperate, so the astronauts ran out of time to install its replacement. NASA says a fully functional backup antenna is still keeping communication links with its tracking and relay satellites working normally, so the station's crew was never at risk. Ground teams have already scheduled a follow-up spacewalk for August 25 to finish the antenna swap. For Menon, it was his second spacewalk, but for Adenot, a former helicopter test pilot before joining the European Space Agency, this milestone marked her very first steps outside a spacecraft. The event was the 282nd spacewalk supporting the space station since assembly began.

Egyptian Tomb Reveals 300 Years of Changing Burial Customs
ENEASY ENGLISH
Deep in the Theban Necropolis across the Nile from Luxor, archaeologists have pieced together nearly three centuries of shifting Egyptian burial customs, all recorded inside a single tomb chamber. A team led by Dr. Jared Carballo-Pérez and Professor Miguel Ángel Molinero Polo of the University of La Laguna studied Chamber 3 of Tomb TT 209, uncovering nine separate funerary deposits spanning the Twenty-fifth Dynasty through the Ptolemaic period, roughly 754 BCE to 30 BCE. Inside, they found sixteen mummified people, one mummified dog, and the scattered remains of at least four more individuals. The earliest burials belonged to people of high social standing, who were laid to rest individually in coffins along with funerary nets and protective amulets, the researchers noted. Over time, as more bodies needed space, the tradition changed dramatically: about two-thirds of later burials were stacked directly on top of one another instead of being placed in separate coffins. Even the position of the arms shifted, moving from stretched out to folded, and eventually into the classic Osirian pose, with both arms crossed over the chest. The findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology, offer a rare, continuous record of how one community's funerary customs evolved across generations.

Animals Have Been Eating Nature's Original Bioplastic for Ages
ENEASY ENGLISH
Long before humans invented biodegradable plastic, nature had already come up with its own version, and it turns out plenty of animals have been quietly eating it for hundreds of millions of years. Bacteria and other microbes produce natural bioplastics called polyhydroxyalkanoates, or PHAs, storing them inside their cells as tiny energy reserves. Scientists always assumed only microorganisms could break these substances down, but a team led by Nicole Dubilier and Maggie Sogin at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen, Germany, discovered otherwise. The study began with a curious marine worm called Olavius algarvensis, which lives by farming bacteria inside its own body. Searching genomes across the animal kingdom, the researchers found related PHA-degrading enzymes in more than 66 species spanning nine different animal groups, from sponges to earthworms to springtails. Laboratory tests confirmed that even distantly related animals could successfully break the material down and use it as food. Sogin said animals have probably been feeding on nature's original bioplastic for hundreds of millions of years, and scientists are only discovering it now. The findings, published in Nature Ecology and Evolution, suggest today's biodegradable plastics might be more compatible with natural food webs than previously thought.
